Strait of Hormuz Chokepoint

Core idea: The narrow waterway between Iran and Oman through which ~20% of the world’s oil passes. Iran’s ability to close it is the single most consequential asymmetric weapon on the planet - it costs almost nothing to deploy and costs the global economy trillions.

Why It Matters

The Strait is the physical bottleneck that makes the entire price-hierarchy vulnerable:

  • ~20% of global oil transits through it daily
  • Japan, China, India, and Europe depend on this flow for survival
  • The GCC states export almost all their oil through it
  • There is no alternative route at comparable volume

Closing the Strait triggers the price-hierarchy cascade: oil price spike → fertilizer collapse → food crisis → economic implosion. This is the oil-fertilizer-food-chain in action.

Iran’s Weapon

Iran doesn’t need to win a naval battle. It needs to make the Strait unusable:

  • Sea mines (cheap, effective, hard to clear)
  • Anti-ship missiles from Iranian coastline
  • Fast attack boats
  • Drone swarms
  • Submarine operations

The cost-pyramid math: Iran can threaten the Strait with millions in cheap weapons. Protecting it requires billions in naval assets that are themselves vulnerable.

Strategic Flexibility

Jiang highlights Iran’s ability to selectively close the strait:

  • Close it to US-allied shipping but allow Chinese or Russian vessels through
  • Impose a “toll” rather than a total blockade
  • Calibrate pressure to achieve political objectives

This is the law-of-escalation applied to maritime chokepoints. Iran has more options (gradations of closure) than the US has responses (protect everything or nothing).
