USS Liberty Incident

Core idea: In 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israeli forces intentionally attacked an unarmed American intelligence ship - the USS Liberty - in international waters, killing 34 Americans and wounding 171. The attack was covered up by the US government, and surviving sailors were ordered to stay silent. The incident that reveals the true nature of the “special relationship.”

The 1967 Turning Point

The Six-Day War in which the USS Liberty was attacked also produced a massive theological shift. When Israel captured the Old City of Jerusalem and reached the Western Wall, religious Zionists began viewing the secular state as a tool of divine purpose - the first step in the messianic process to restore the Third Temple. The secular project became a religious one.

Key Insight

The USS Liberty incident is not about 1967 - it’s about what it reveals about the structure of power. A nation attacked an American warship, killed American sailors, and the American government covered it up. This is only possible if the attacking nation holds leverage over the defending nation that exceeds normal diplomatic relationships. The intelligence and financial leverage that makes this possible is the same leverage that later executes the clean-break-memo.
