USS Liberty Incident

Core idea: In 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israeli forces intentionally attacked an unarmed American intelligence ship - the USS Liberty - in international waters, killing 34 Americans and wounding 171. The attack was covered up by the US government, and surviving sailors were ordered to stay silent. The incident that reveals the true nature of the “special relationship.”

What Happened

During the 1967 Six-Day War:

  1. The USS Liberty, an American intelligence ship, was operating in international waters
  2. Israeli forces strafed, torpedoed, and attempted to completely sink the ship
  3. The goal: kill every American sailor on board to prevent them from reporting on Israeli war crimes
  4. 34 Americans killed, 171 wounded

The Cover-Up

President Lyndon B. Johnson covered up the attack. The official justification: he didn’t want to escalate tensions with the Soviet Union by formally acknowledging Israel’s intentional attack on an American vessel. The surviving sailors were ordered to stay silent.

The US government sold out its own servicemen to protect the reputation of a foreign state.

The Pattern

The USS Liberty fits into a sequence that begins with the lavon-affair (1954) and continues through:

  • Lavon Affair (1954) - Bombing American facilities
  • USS Liberty (1967) - Attacking an American warship
  • Apollo Affair - Stealing nuclear materials (connected to JFK’s assassination in some analyses)
  • Beirut barracks (1983) - Americans dying as proxies for Israeli operations
  • 9/11 foreknowledge claims - Allowing an attack to create a pretext for the clean-break-memo

Each escalation is more brazen than the last. Each cover-up is more complete. The pattern demonstrates that the US government’s commitment to the “special relationship” overrides its commitment to its own citizens.

The 1967 Turning Point

The Six-Day War in which the USS Liberty was attacked also produced a massive theological shift. When Israel captured the Old City of Jerusalem and reached the Western Wall, religious Zionists began viewing the secular state as a tool of divine purpose - the first step in the messianic process to restore the Third Temple. The secular project became a religious one.

Key Insight

The USS Liberty incident is not about 1967 - it’s about what it reveals about the structure of power. A nation attacked an American warship, killed American sailors, and the American government covered it up. This is only possible if the attacking nation holds leverage over the defending nation that exceeds normal diplomatic relationships. The intelligence and financial leverage that makes this possible is the same leverage that later executes the clean-break-memo.
